Great question kudos! Thesis statement, and your Introduction should be the grab to the main body of the essay or report. Definitley not long I usually go for nothing more than 5 lines for an Intro. depending on the topic, and how long the essay or report is.

G'day Tash,
Thank you for your question.
Your introduction should introduce the points you intend to make in response to the question. You can them flesh it out in the body of your essay. If possible, your introduction should engage the readers interest with a relevant anecdote or quotation.
I have attached sources for your reference.
Regards

This has been said about public speaking but it goes for essays as well.
You tell them what you're going to say. In your introduction outline what you will talk about also include your thesis statement.
In the body of the essay tell them what you have to say.
In the conclusion, tell them what you've said. A brief recap of your conclusions.

In an itroduction you have to restate the question, showing you understand what is asked, then outline your answer which you will detail in subsequent paragraphs.
Simple Answer - Re word the question they have asked, and briefly answer. Not too long winded though.
