Did Yahoo have to comply with a demand by Chinese authorities to provide information about a personal e-mail of journalist Shi Tao who was later convicted under repressive state secrecy laws. This single act of passing on private information under the duress of a repressive regime has much wider implications for all Yahoo users engaged in the political activity of expressing their views. It is a landmark example of the way corporations like Yahoo offer freedom of expression on the one hand but help the smooth passage of journalists into jail on the other.

So you think you have freedom of speech on yahoo do you .Frankly the case your talking about I never heard of in my country but boy when i made a simple mistake onQ&A there was no freedom of speech there .They hounded me day and night until I got my message accross that it was an honest mistake and that I printed out Their terms conditions and guidelines so i dont make this mistake or another by refreshing it in my mind from time to time .Common sense in the end prevailed and I am allowed to partisipate in what I like best asking and answering questions .The misunderstanding came about because of how we use our english namely the word abuse .After reading the english dictionary I know I violated an agreement and appologised .It was surprising to me that the USA used such an english term .perhaps the pogram was written by an english company or person.Definately not Australian we never see these 2 words as meaning the same :ie Abuse and Violation.Perhaps I should ask America if they see them as the same .Anyway as I said Yahoo forgave my mistake I thanked them and now I can do what I like best Help poorer people who cant afford professional help.Cheers Have a nice day.

Yahoo did something like Google did. Google in China is controlled and the results you get are not exactly what they should be, if you know what i mean.
Yahoo had no right to give personal information to anyone but probably they did because people higher than them made them do it.
Personally I don't feel safe using anything on the internet right now.
And let's be real about it. There is no freedom of speech anywhere on this planet. But that doesn't mean we have to stop. They can't kill us all guys, who's gonna work for them :):)

Yahoo, and corporations in general, do not explicitly offer freedom of expression. Corporations' only aim is to earn money and profits. China is a major market for Yahoo. Corporations, and the majority of people therein, are amoral and care not about human rights, freedom of expression and information, and specifically, China's awful regime. It's repugnant and outrageous -- I agree with you -- but money makes the "world go around," not fairness, decency, and rights.

It's all about the money. If Yahoo hadn't done that they would no longer be able to service China. All the big companies want to sell to the world no matter the boundaries.
