I have no problem with modesty, I just think that a woman can look modest without covering her head with a specific garment. A simple haircut, not too much makeup, clothes that aren't too revealing, all can be very modest. The hijab is a sort of uniform or sign of belonging to a certain group. It separates people. What do you think?

The stupid thing is the Qu'ran doesn't even tell them that women have to cover themselves like that.
It states that ALL PEOPLE, regardless of gender, should simply behave with modesty. Whether you interprete that, as not kicking around nude, or being covered head to toe is up to you. But it is ridiculous to believe the latter is the intention. It is simply the interpretation of dirty old lecherous Muslim men, who can't keep their hands off if they can see flesh.
Wearing a headscarf is modest, wearing a Burka is simply oppressing the women and preventing them from expressing themselves as individuals, therefore empowering them. Islam is sexist and puts women down into a secondary role in society.
To support my arguement the BBC is about to show a documentary about how increasingly Muslim women are being banned from worshipping in Mosques across Britian, despite the Qu'ran ordering them to allow women to worship in the Mosque. Why would they do this?
It is blatant sexism, and oppression of their women.

Why not cover your head with a specific garment? How is a headscarf divisive? We all wear clothes that show we belong to certain groups - band t-shirts, crucifixes etc. I don't see why Muslims should define what is modest by anyone's definition except their own.

To be honest, I'd be happy to wear hijab for work - it would make the morning routine simpler, and I don't want to be judged for my looks when I'm working. I'd just go back to miniskirts and curling tongs for the weekend!

What I don't get is why men don't have hijab - why is modesty different for men and women?

Why cannot we get out of this concept that hijab is only for covering of the head, you can as you say wear clothes that don't reveal your private parts and cover your hair with a scarf, that will be similar to the hijab. The basic purpose of the Hijab is that the female private parts should be covered, if you wear clothes accordingly that is Hijab for you.America and Europe are countries which boast of civil liberties if a Muslim lady wants to wear a Hijab and she is happy with that then leave her alone, every religion has its own identity the Muslim women has a hijab.

Surah Noor, says: " And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons..." [Al-Qur’an 24:31] 3. Six criteria for Hijaab. According to Qur’an and Sunnah there are basically six criteria for observing hijaab: Extent: The first criterion is the extent of the body that should be covered. This is different for men and women. The extent of covering obligatory on the male is to cover the body at least from the navel to the knees. For women, the extent of covering obligatory is to cover the complete body except the face and the hands upto the wrist. If they wish to, they can cover even these parts of the body. Some scholars of Islam insist that the face and the hands are part of the obligatory extent of ‘hijaab’. All the remaining five criteria are the same for men and women. The clothes worn should be loose and should not reveal the figure. The clothes worn should not be transparent such that one can see through them. The clothes worn should not be so glamorous as to attract the opposite sex. The clothes worn should not resemble that of the opposite sex. The clothes worn should not resemble that of the unbelievers i.e. they should not wear clothes that are specifically identities or symbols of the unbelievers’ religions. 4. Hijaab includes conduct and behaviour among other things Complete ‘hijaab’, besides the six criteria of clothing, also includes the moral conduct, behaviour, attitude and intention of the individual. A person only fulfilling the criteria of ‘hijaab’ of the clothes is observing ‘hijaab’ in a limited sense. ‘Hijaab’ of the clothes should be accompanied by ‘hijaab’ of the eyes, ‘hijaab’ of the heart, ‘hijaab’ of thought and ‘hijaab’ of intention. It also includes the way a person walks, the way a person talks, the way he behaves, etc.

actually we the humans make our opinion on things according to what we see and learn from our surroundings.. the cultural difference between the west and east is really immense.. thats y wearing hijab looks alil weard to u guys.. but here women r not only used to it.. they feel embarrassing without it. goin out without hijab for us is like maybe goin with sum see through dress in the west.. it looks alil u know, nasty here in eastern countries.. u guys decide modesty according to ur culture which sounds okay to u.. but here we have our own parameters.. yes ofcourse every1 has a right to live their life the way they want to.. but they dont have any right to offend other ppl by going into public places like that..
just like going nude in some western countries might be offensive.. so that the thing.. its all about what majority of ppl think .. and here most ppl find it offensive go without hijab..

@ accentric
r u sure? what if ppl in the east think that the drooling greedy men attached all that revealing women clothes to ur culture for their benefit..

Hi
Mostly Muslim women wear hijab. It is done on purpose, and they want to tell the man that I am not into game of "boy friend girl friend", sex without marriage or so. And also to show that they are Muslims, like the Catholics who wear cross.
Hope this helps!

The hijab is not completely about modesty. It's about belief. The wearing of the hijab/burqa/purdah/what have you, is submission to Allah (swt) and a symbol of your faith in Him. It's along the same lines of women who wear hats to church or chapel veils in the old Catholic tradition. Modesty is all the things you mentioned but not about faith. Hijab is about faith and modesty is a secondary benefit.

You certainly don't need to wear a hijab. I always dress modestly and don't wear a head covering.

why prayer? people can be spiritual without prayer. get my point.

separates people?
the way it separates a nun from other westerners??
why shouldnt it sepearte when they have a different definition of modest..i think it should..because most likely other definitions dont tally either.
