Well, for me, I'd just take the time to make the pumpkin lantern with him...
sometimes those 1-1 things are the most special things you can ever do for your kids.

they are to year old boys they will enjoy getting messy just make sure you do it outside or some where you don't mind getting messy.
make sure you have a big pumpkin 1 each or they share one it wil be easier to carve.
I that doesnt work when carving do it a little different instead of the normal triangles and zig zagz and remeber all they wnt to do is hav some fun and time together.

put boobs on the pumpkin. it'll bring him great nostalgia of yummy goodness. vampire costumes are good. I was voted as having the best costume at a party in elementary school for being a vampire. if vampires were real, i'd love to be a vampire. who wouldn't want to live forever?

Put a black mask around the eyes and tie it around the back where it looks like it has a costume as well.

Yup, use a turnip instead of a pumpkin. I turnip is more traditional..
