you could have put the tank on an uneven surface or some body at the pet store carelessly handled the tank or it could have bean damaged dooring shipping. Any way find some thing to put the fish in and use only the water from the tank also put in some of the gravel from the tank this way the ammonia eating bacteria will not be totally destroyed and put an air pump with small air stone and tank heater in side container. get a couple of five gallon buckets to put every thing in for now.

Sounds like it must be plastic, glass does not just crack while it is sitting there. Plastic, when it is molded at the factory can have stress lines in it when the plastic cools unevenly. Later when it is under a load (filled with water), the stress line gives way and cracks. Is it leaking, if so, go buy a plastic tote bin at Wal-Mart and put the water and fish in that until you have the problem resolved with the fish store.

If it is not too old, take it back to the store where you bought it and ask them to replace it. If that fails, call the company who made it and talk to one of their reps. They will usually make things like that right for just the cost of the shipping the tanks back and forth.

You need to get the fish out into a container that hasn't had anything nasty like chemicals in it with as much of the tank water as you can salvage. Drain as much of the water out of the tank as you can otherwise you're going to end up with a hell of a mess. Your tank could have had a tiny weak spot/crack/chip in the glass & because the weight of the water against it is so much it will make it crack. If it's plastic you don't know how long it's been sitting in the shop, possibly exposed to the sun & that will make the plastic brittle & fragile. Go out & get a new tank.

You need to find another large container...fast. Don't use anything that has had any type of chemical or substance in it that may have left traces of itself behind, and rinse out whatever you do find, no soap, and dry it. Transfer the fish from the cracking tank *along with the water they're currently in* (very important) to the container. This will have the least amount of stress on them, and should hold them over till morning when you get them a new tank. Ask the person at the pet store for advice on conditioning the new tank. Looking at your other questions, you might want to get a book on fish/water quality care. Good luck with the fishies!

The tank that you got must have been banged about when it was shipped to the store. You must move like you never moved before and get the fish out right away, before they're dead. put them in other containers if possible or if yo have another tank put them in it, if the fish can all get along safely.

Take that piece of rubbish back and demand a tank that's sound.

Take Care & Good Luck.

Well, if its made of glass, the factory might have use a thin glass. Remember the weight that your aquarium have with all that water and sand in it. Also have you place the aquarium on a flat surface? Do you have a styrophore under the tank? Uneven surface may cause tension to the glass and cause cracks.

Possibnly defects in the glass, poor handling somewhere along the line (not necissarily you though). Get a new tank, that one is done for.
