TWYNDYLLYNGS (is the longest word in English that doesn't contain one of the five vowels (A E I O U). It comes from Welsh and is obviously rare. It turns out that "twyndyllyng" (singular) is a 15th century spelling of the word "twinling," which means, in modern English, "twin.")

Surprisingly, The y in "sky" and "try" IS a vowel (not just a 'sorta-vowel', a real one!), so that won't work.

The problem is the same with "cwm" (a Welsh word pronounced "coom") in which the w is functioning as a vowel.

Actually, functions as a vowel much more often than as a consonant, and w can be the equivalent of u (mostly in the combinations aw, ew, ow, which are equivalent to au, eu, ou)

The basic rule is this -- y or w at the BEGINNING of a syllable are used as consonants, in the middle of end of syllables they mark as VOWELS.

There are some words without vowels. Sky, spy, cry,my,why, shy, tryst, myths. All these words have the alphabet 'y'. So can we consider 'y' as sub-vowel?

Everything that has a y in it and no other vowel can work. Not that hard. Cry, why, shy, by, and rhythm are some examples.

As far as I know, the only way you can do it is with the letter "Y" acting as the vowel...try, fry, my, etc.

Cry, fly, gym, my, sly, dye and rye. Though they don't have vowels in them the "y" makes an "i" sound.
