Because it appears in Revelation. The writer intended it to refer to a Roman emperor but he did not want to be arrested so he wrote the name in code, as a number made of the letters in the name. Now the writer, the readers and the emperor are all long gone, but the number remains (and some versions say it's "616"). So people make it into all kinds of bad things. It's just a number now.

It says so in Revelations.
Book of Revelation 13:18. From the King James translation:
"Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."
New American Bible:
"Wisdom is needed here; one who understands can calculate the number of the beast, for it is a number that stands for a person. His number is six hundred and sixty-six"
Although it has been said that it is actually 616 or 665
"In the Greek manuscripts, the Number is rendered in Greek numerical form as “Ïξϔ,[6] or sometimes literally as “six hundred and sixty-six”, “á¼Î¾Î±ÎºÏÏιοι á¼Î¾Î®ÎºÎ¿Î½Ïα á¼Î¾”.[7][8] The oldest known record of the verse, a fragment of an early manuscript of Revelation from the Oxyrhynchus site, gives a different number, 616, as “Ïιϔ.[1] The early Church father Irenaeus knew several occurrences of the 616-variant but regarded them as a scribal error, although he didn't know the meaning of the number.[9] The Zurich Bible which is based on the oldest Bible manuscripts also mentions the number 616.
It is important to note that the website for Oxyrhynchus states that the number is a mistake as represented as 616 or 665 and also that 666 can not be a representation of Nero."

Because in the UK the emergency services phone number is 999, some one once dialed 666 by mistake and a dozen cops turn up all on their heads.
They all said "What the devil are you playing at"!!

The bible says that the number of the beast is 666. It does not explain anything else about it. sorry I looked but there's no explanation.

because 9 represents the omega or the end flip the 9 's and you get 6 upside down and backwards from the end, dont be scared just repent afterall he says confess in my name and you r forgiven, so hell whats to be scared of, lol, hell i dont know its late and i;m just rambling
