Tricky question, its not always safe to trust people online. I met the love of my life online and now we live together. Advice on the matter would be to meet in a local place (not a bar) like maybe a burger king or mcdonalds or something a few times if the person you are meeting just doesn't feel right then cut it off. Never tell the other person where you live or go to his place. If the guy is decent then he won't try to rush you into things. If the guys trying to convince you for instance to go back to his house and its getting out of hand make a scene in the place you at get attention from others around and if he gets up and leaves stay put for a while until you are sure he has left so he doesn't follow you back home or don't go back home right away go other places first. Public transportation could be a good idea.

I met my partner online, and two happy years later I'm very glad that I did!

People you meet online are the same people you meet in real life. I'd be more careful meeting people in bars and clubs - you know nothing about them when you start talking.

Wait until you've met someone in person before you decide to trust them or not, but there's no need to think they are automatically untrustworthy because they use the internet.

Yes you can. But as with real life you have to be careful. In real life when you meet someone you can assess their mannerisms, their speech patterns, their body language, their clothes, their smell, their personal grooming, any number of things. Online, depending on the method there is a lot of scope for lies and deception.

So you have to be more careful that you perhaps might in real life. But there are decent normal human beings out there, who hang out online.
