this is usually called as a Gene. Achromosome is made up of a long DNA. this is coiled into the chromosome but only a small segment of the DNA unwinds and is replicated,transcribedand translated.This length of the dna that codes for a protein(function) is the gene

In general term, this is known as a Gene. You will have a gene for eye colour; another gene codes for haemoglobin in your blood etc.

However, it is important to note that not all the length of DNA will actually code for the required function.

DNA, and individual genes, are made up of Exons and Introns. Exons are the bits which code for things, they are EXpressed. Introns do not code for anything; they are useless bits of code left over from millions of years of mutation and evolution. These Introns are removed at various stages of the protein production process (a bit too complicated to explain here!)
