"living under a rock" refers, I think to desert creatures who live in the shade of a rock, or live under a rock during the heat of the day and come out at night when it is cooler. It generally has a negative connotation and is used as an admonishment. "Hey, you can't live under a rock all your life." translates something like this " Hey, you can't be a hermit or a recluse all your life. Get out there and have some fun. Meet somebody." It implies timidity like a little desert mouse, or reclusivity like a snake.

creepy like a bug or a recluse ,hermit as such detached enough for me at any rate I always heard of it as what rock did you crawl out from under ?a certain cut .
