Please understand that this question isn't intended to be disruptive or critical. This is a question that I've had for a long time, and nobody has been able to adequately explain it to me. I'm a lesbian, I expect that the queer community I live in will be comprised of other homosexuals and bisexuals. But transgendered people are not a minority due to sexual orientation. Can somebody explain the connection to me? Why do we now have a "T" in "LGBT?" Thanks!

Maybe I should clarify exactly what I'm confused about. Gender issues are entirely separate from sexuality. A person who feels trapped in their physical body shares, as far as I'm concerned, no obvious characteristics with a person who has a sexual attraction to their own gender. One is a physical and psychological issue, the other is based in sexuality. Why then are we lumped together? Hope that helps.

Transgender is an umbrella term, and whether they should or should not be is really up to the individual. I don't think it's right for anyone to say trans people shouldn't be included or make comments like "They're not like us." at the end of the day we're all seen as outcast by the majority. Edited: The same goes for bisexual people too, there's just as much hate thrown at bisexuals as there is gays, some people refuse to even acknowledge bisexuality as an actual orientation.

The term transgender comprises a lot of different groups: transsexual, cross-dresser, transvestite, adrogyne, pansexual. Although people in these groups do not necessarily have the sexual orientation issue themselves, the 'outside world' may perceive one. Additionally, a MTF post-op transsexual may identify themselves as a transgendered lesbian.
But basically what it comes down to is that acceptance means inclusion. The LGB community is more accepting of the transgender community so they are now included.

I am sure there could be a straight transexual, but I would imagine most are not. The label appended to your sexual preferrence, directly correlates to your to your inherent biological makeup. If you are born with female hardware, you are a woman. If you are born with male hardware, you are a male. If you think otherwise, you are living a lie. If you more closely identify with the opposite sex, then so be it. Take hormone therapy. Receive electrolysis treatments. Breast implants. Cheek implants. Larnyx reconstruction. Buttucks implants. You can even go all the way, just don't lie to yourself and say that you are something you are not.

Because they don't exactly fall under the hetero category. And you may not view them as a minority due to sexual orientation, but I do for some cases. Hell, my orientation isn't even IN LGBT... There's no O for omnisexual. *shrugs* That's just the way it is.

often it includes gay, lesbian, transgendered, and leather or BDSM.
Simply put it is easier to lump all the "alternitive lifestyles" (as they are often called) together.
edit-
Also often the lines blur a bit when people are involved in several "lifestyles" (I hate that word)
I myself am a bi-sexual, leather Top, who lives in a poly releationship.......... *lol* talk about a mixture.

I've always found this a bit strange, because the majority of transgendered people view themselves as straight. But I suppose it's because they face the same prejudices from society as us gay/bi people (probably even more) and we can offer them support.

because some transgendered people like same sex individuales and society as a whole looks at us like we are gay. i for one consider myself a straight female and i am a pre-op transsexual so in societies eyes not only am i some kinda freak but im also a gay male.
since you clarified let me. transgendered people, in sociseties eyes, are looked at as if they are gay. at the same time some may be gay. for example my pre-op (m2f) room mate prefers girls and would be clasified as bi with extreem lesbian tendencies
i on the other hand prefer men, so one of us is considered gay priop to surgery while the other will be considered gay post surgery.

The gay community welcomes the trangenders into itself with open arms because it swells their ranks and makes them look like a larger portion of the populace than they really are. Its a way of adding numbers to the "10% lie."

although unfair because most cd and tv people are not gay, like someone else said its easy to put general label on people who are different. because we scare mainstream society they feel they have to label and pigeon hole us. i only hope some day we will all just be people instead of having to be classified.
