American Universities are a waste of time, and your PhD would not be taken as seriously elsewhere in the world, if you got it from a US Uni. You'd also have to pay for the whole thing yourself. You'd be much better going to any British Uni (Scottish Universities are very highly regarded!), where you'd be able to get an allowance from the department for lecturing too, which would cover at least some of your course fees. When it comes to Yankee Universities though, just don't do it!

Don't listen to the previous answerer, US universities are widely regarded as the best in the world (and no, I'm not American) - see the rankings at www.thes.co.uk if you don't believe me, the USA dominates the top part of the table.

Do be very, very wary of distance only institutions though, many are just diploma mills without accreditation.

My advice would be to find out what the top universities in your field are (check USNWR rankings and the Gourman report), and then see what distance learning options they have available.

For a PhD though, I don't think you'll have too much luck finding a good, purely distance learning course.

If you do apply for a real PhD at a proper university, they should have stipends available for you. Distance learning makes this more difficult though, since stipends are usually conditional upon you offering your services as a teaching assistant.
