You are promising your devotion to the person. Either before God and your family, or just in front of your family. By taking a vow of marriage you are basically promising by legal right that you will be monogamous to that one person. Though sometimes that doesn't always happen, because there is adultry and stuff like that. Back a long time ago...taking a verbal vow was just as legally binding as a written one but because there was so many illerate people taking a verbal vow was the only way, and that is why you also repeat the vow after the person who is overseeing the ceremony.

The meaning of a vow in a Marriage depends on the Person's understanding. Marriage is a Moral obligation toward one another.

Ever hear the expression, "A man is only as good as his word?"

Well, a vow is an oath a solemn promise above all others.

If it's in front of the Justice of the Peace, it's an oath to the one you are getting married to, the witnesses, the Judge and the state.

If it's a Church wedding, it is an oath to the one you are getting married to, the witnesses, the guests, the minister and to God.

It is a promise that is not to be broken in fact, it is a promise that it is even unthinkable that it would be broken.

Depends on who you ask. Most people don't take vows to heart.. They're just words. A vow is the promise of all promises and to break your vows you broke a promise.

It is whatever you make it in your own mind, or none really. Half of all marriages end in divorce. Marriage is a religious and/or society based institution, which is a means of control. However, the law says we are free to choose, which means in this case we can commit to a marriage, then later decide to become uncommitted if we want. You can do this in as many marriages as you want. So is there a point...maybe for some and not for others.

The significance is huge. In a marriage vow you promise to love, honor, cherish and to be faithful to that person.

If you can't be faithful....dn't bother getting married

Well, you basically make a promise to stay faithful and take care of eachother until one of you kicks the bucket. It's significant because if you stay true to it, it's some serious sh*t that you just promised to do!
