good question. i had my 1st son on Oct 29 i year ago. I'll soon be having my 2nd son in Dec, so i think i can help you. my water broke when i was only 36 weeks (1 month early). i went straight to the hospital. (i did not take and kind of birthing classes btw) the water broke around 2 p.m. and i started having the "kinda painful" contractions around 7 p.m. in the beginning i did not want to have an epidural but it got painful (i was having back labor - that's where it kills your back to lay or stand in any position) i ended up having the epidural around 9 p.m. and there was NO MORE pain what-so-ever. they also put a catheter in but i did not feel it b/c of the epidural. i was numb from my belly button down. they waited for me to finish dilating (i took a nap) and around 3 a.m. they came back to check me and said i was at 10 cm.s and that i could start to push in a few minuts...i did not know how to push!! they explained everything to me and said to hold my breath and push until they counted to 10...so i tried to do that. they said to push like your having a bowl movement. it was kinda hard to push for the whole 10 seconds but i tried my best. i pushed for about 15 minuts and my son was born. i cant tell you anything else b/c i dont remember...i was so happy! there was no pain for me (after the epidural). If you have any more questions i would be glad to answer anything. btownsbabyblueangel@yahoo.com. Good Luck!!!! p.s. the most painful thing for me was them checking to see if i was dilated but once the epidural happened, i did not feel them checking anymore.

It depends on the woman really, especially their tolerance for pain.

At the beginning contractions can just feel like a pressure feeling, like being bear hugged. Other times they can feel like the bear hug with the nastiest menstrual cramp you could imagine.

Of course it's going to be painful, labor is a serious workout for a woman (a well worth-it workout). One thing that worked WONDERFUL for me (even being induced, which makes the contractions stronger), was breathing techniques. When you hit a contraction, look up or look at something, concentrate on it, and breathe. Try not to think of the intensity of the contraction. Just slowly breathe in, then breathe out, repeat until contraction is done.

Try not to scream - like I said "try". I will admit that there were a few contractions that I screamed my head off with, but that was right before I said "screw it" and got the epidural (14 hours later). Screaming will intensify the pain of the contraction, which makes you miserable.

Depending on how much you want to feel, you can get an epidural, and let me tell you - they are wonderful. You don't feel a THING. Really, the only thing I felt was a slight bit of pressure, but it didn't hurt. Downside is - is that you can't move your legs as well.

Have someone give you a back massage!!!!! The doctor who did my epidural had to press on my back to figure out where he wanted the needle to go (they don't really hurt, and if they do - the pain goes away within a minute), and when he was pressing on my back it felt like a massage, and it felt great - so my family and husband volunteered to massage my upper back where I could feel it - I was in heaven.

Good luck with your labor!! :)

You should attend birthing classes. I loved "Birthing From Within" it was amazing and helped me through 12 hours of Pitocin induce contractions with no pain meds.
Bradley classes and lamaze classes are some other choices.

Drugs such as epidurals are over-sold and have many negative side effects. Labor can be as painful as you make it. Remember to breathe and to let gravity help bring your baby out. If you are laying in a bed clenching your jaw the whole time you are making your body work so much harder. Vertical positions, such as walking, squatting, bouncing on a ball or rocking in a rocking chair are all helpful.

Have you read any birth books? Your local library probably has some. I would recommend spending your remaining pregnancy reading about birth, breastfeeding and other parenting issues you may not have thought of.

One thing I wish they would have told me when I was going to have labor is that it feels like you have to go to the bathroom. That means time to push. I kept telling the nurse I had to go and was so worried that I was going to poop on the delivery table. It was terrible. Now, I know that is just the sign you are ready to push. I didn't have any epiderals or anything, but it will take away the pain if you are worried about it. Hope all goes smoothly.

get an epidural, thats about the only thing that makes it less painful. actually it makes it painless for the most part :). Labor basically feels like your entire stomach tighetning as hard as it can, like the skin tighetning into a tight grip.. then as the contraction goes away it loosens the grip on you. and then they just get stronger and stronger and more and more painful.

Relax, if you can stay calm you will find it much easier to deal w/ the pain, + a epidural helps. Since this must be your first labor will be pretty long, so rest up, you will feel alot more pain if you are exausted.

That's not a real easy question because every woman's labor and delivery are different.
They call it labor for a reason....
trust me, when it's all said and done. You will forget about the pain. It's amazing!
