I'm going to learn how to play guitar. I write with my left hand, but I play sports with my right hand, so I'm not sure which one I should get. I tried to play on my friend's righty guitar, but it was a little uncomfortable. I'm just worried that I'll get an expensive lefty guitar and then suck.

You are what is called bidexterous. So am I. As a general rule, if you can handle the righty, go with it since more people play right handed guitars. If you're ever asked to jam with a band on the spur of the moment, it's unlikely they will have a lefty guitar sitting around waiting for you.

Bottom line: If you absolutely have to have the lefty, go for it, but if possible, go for the more practical choice.

Some stores will let you to demo instruments before buying them... I'd suggest to demo both lefty and righty guitars for a week or so and see how you feel after that.

I think the cost-benefit will be considerably less than buying a guitar and then realizing you dont like it/cant play it.

Good luck and play on!

I play hockey Righty. I am a natural Righty when it comes to baseball but I can hit Lefty and with more power. I can't throw a baseball or anything for that matter with my Left hand. I golf Righty

You have a mixed laterality or mixed dominance, meaning you use different hands for different tasks. You choose the most comfortable and more accurate hand to do a task and it is not always the same one. Left-handers are more frequently mixed-dominant than right-handers.
For the guitar, find a tutor that is able to teach both left- and right-handed guitar. Then have them let you learn some basic moves on their guitars to find out which best suits you. THEN go out an buy a guitar to meet your taste and budget.
Good luck!

There are plenty of cheap beginner guitars. Don't go spend a lot of money yet. Have you ever played baseball? When you bat right handed, your left hand is on the bottom, right? When you bat left handed, your right hand is on the bottom. I think you should go by this. If you bat right handed, then play the guitar left handed.

Jimmy hendrix played a righty, flipped upside down and restrung so he could play as a lefty. You could do the same.

whichever way you choose, you can learn. if you get a lefty guitar and realize you suck, then practice more to catch up.
