i have been using a bt home hub for 4 months now and the only problem i seem to get is the odd connection problem about twice a month
your problem seems to be spyware, which can be very nasty depending on the type you get
spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)is one of the best programs for cleaning spyware from your p.c,and it also stops it from getting back on aswell
once installed you will be asked to back up the registry,do this and then you will be asked to download all the latest updates ,this is important,as new ones come out every friday, and once you have done this you must imunize the p.c,this basically stops you getting infected in the future, any time a spyware trys to get on your p.c spybot will stop it in its stride
another program to run in unison with spybot is lavasoft adaware(http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware),this works well with spybot and scans for similar threats
one final program is ewido(http://www.ewido.net/en/),this is a 30 day evaluation but after that period you can still use the scanner and cleaner but the resident sheild wont work but its handy to have just for the cleaner as spybot will give you the best sheild anyway
if you use all these anti-spyware programs and scan with each you will unearth many infections and will notice a marked improvement in your computers speed
good luck

It's probably a process that starts using 100% CPU. To test this try the following when your PC starts to slow down:

1. Right click on the task bar (blue bar at bottom of screen) and select Task manager.

2. In Task Manager, click on the processes tab and then click along the top (below the tabs) where it says CPU to sort the list.

3. Look for a process thats using 99% - 100% CPU (Ignore System Idle Process)

4. If there is......right click on it and click "end process"

5. Update your question and tell us which process was using a lot of CPU % so we can tell you which program needs to reinstalled or uninstalled.

If any of the processes aren't using a lot of CPU %, then it may be a process with a memory leak, using too much memory. If this is the case try the above again but this time look at the programs which are using the most memory (click on MEM USAGE above the list to sort the list). Again let us know which Process is using the most memory.

I have a sneaking suspicion that you are using the BT browser and if anything, it will be that thats causing the slowdown, uninstall it and use a proper Internet browser like Firefox, Opera or IE6 instead.

Oh and finally, 256Mb RAM really isn't enough for Win XP, do yourself a favour and buy another 256Mb RAM (it's only about £20).

I have the same problem on my pc at home and its all the software it puts on your PC. Especially on start up so try more RAM that would help a system like your get the extra boost as 512MB is the standard now for any speed computer. If you can try and remove the BT Yahoo! Browser as it slows down the fastest of PCs lots. I hope this helps

Spyware and Adware will slow your pc to a crawl.

Go to www.lavasoft.com and download Ad-Aware personal edition(it's free). Also, go to www.spybot.com and download the Spybot program, also free.

Don't worry you can have more than one Anti-spyware/adware program on your pc. Actually, it's recommended!

After both are installed and updated scan your computer with both and follow the prompts to delete the spyware your program has found.

I can get on line in 10 seconds sometimes and 10 minutes other times. It depends on the automatic alternatives provided and the time of day.
Your Net Barrier software should take care of spy-ware as should your computers Firewall.
