Despite the reputation of the *country* of Iran and it's leaders, it's people have a long-standing reputation for being very nice, polite, and courteous. Many visitors that I've heard from are almost surprised at how much the people are unlike the rantings of their leaders.

What you are describing sounds more like Saudi Arabia. I hear that Iran is quite cosmopolite, they have some really modern areas but also some very poor areas in the country. In the cities many women wear scarves and not the full "burka" type covering.
Many men stick up for their women folk. I have Iranian friends. They says that the main thing wrong with Iran is the crazy mullahs who run it.

I had several Iranians work for me. Two women and one man. If you want to be studying lying then mix it up with Iranians. These three were unbelievable. They would lie even if you asked them for the correct time. I suppose there are good and bad Iranians just like everywhere in the world. If only Iran can get rid of that s**thead president then perhaps they would have a good chance at being a fine country?

It's actually very mountainous; people wear western style clothes more than say Saudi or Iraq.
