I picked this tick off my dog yesterday and I'm wondering if anyone knows what kind of tick it is. It is obviously a highly engorged tick and is about 1 cm long.

Here are some close up photos (I used my cell phone camera so the resolution is not great.) I took one of the top and two of the bottom.

Warning: photos are not for the squeamish or faint of heart!

Should I be worried?
Thank you

It looks like a brown dog tick- engorged. When you pull a tick off any animal, you need to get as close to the skin as possible with tweezers in order to get all of it out. Gently pull out any "left-overs". It can get infected if you don't get it all.
Ticks can carry diseases so it's best to keep an eye on your dog, just to be safe.

I'm no expert, but it looks like a regular wood tick. I think lyme disease is carried mainly by deer ticks and worst in the NE U.S., and in other places people aren't so worried about it. I used to live somewhere where we'd regularly pick literally hundreds of ticks off the dog in a week, many of them looking like this. As far as I know, that dog is still alive, and I would consider running to the vet over this an overreaction. But that's just my opinion.

Looks like it could be a deer tick, though hard to tell as it so bloated. If its a deer tick, they do carry some not no nice diseases such as lime disease, or spotted fever. Take him to a vet ASAP

P.S. Nice looking dog!

Also, the poster that said Lyme disease is mostly in the NE is wrong!

It is a kind of a dog mite. You need to buy some solutions that can be used to get rid of those mites. It sucks blood of the dog and it clings to its skin.and if you will leave it for sometime, it will arise to some skin problem to your dog.

I can tell that you should be worried as it can multiply very fast. Try to clean up the places where your dog si staying and apply some remedy to get rid of those mites. Do it as early as possible.

I got a pet dog before similar to your dog but uts color was just lighter and it was infested with such mite which resulted to some skin problems. It was really a hard time on me. Better ask for your vets advice.♥

Eww! I used to see those things on the hound dogs on the ranch in Oklahoma. They look small but when they attach and get engorged they swell up like that. Ick! there would be little blood spots on the cement porch where the things popped! Your dog is beautiful! I'm glad you got that nasty thing off of him/her.

Take your dog to the vet NOW. Your dog could get lime disease, or Rocky Mountain Fever. Any tick could do this. And how did you remove the tick? If you just pulled it out, that is just WRONG!

GO TO THE VET!!!

Agreed, check with the vet....and bring the tick with you! I wouldn't panic, but get your pup tested ASAP. Ticks can carry some nasty diseases.
