What I am looking for is a document from a reliable source which will tell me who our official allies are. Additional information, such as what the criteria is to be an ally of the US and what strings are attached, may be nice too. Thank You!

All the members of NATO are allies by being in NATO. There are other group alliances (ANZUS, SEATO) We have mutual defense treaties with Japan and South Korea. South Korea's seems to have more stings for them, they must agree to US policy.

1778 - Treaty of Alliance - American Revolutionary War alliance with France
1786 - Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship - Morocco--first Sovereign state to recognize the U.S; oldest unbroken U.S. treaty
1800 - Convention of 1800 (Treaty of Mortefontaine) - Ends the Quasi War between France and the U.S
1949 - North Atlantic Treaty (Treaty of Washington) - establishes NATO mutual defense organization
1951 - Mutual Defense Treaty - between the Republic of the Philippines and the United States of America
1952 - ANZUS Treaty - mutual defense alliance between Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S.
1954 - Mutual Defense Treaty - Created an alliance with South Korea, and established basis of South Korean adherence with U.S consultations on North Korean policy
1954 - Southeast Asia Collective Defense Treaty - creates SEATO mutual defense organization
1960 - Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan - mutual defense treaty with Japan

Having a treaty with a country would make it an official ally. But popular criteria don't always agree, we are still officially allies with France. Counties are generally obligated to come to each others defense, but not aid attacks.

Official: certainly everyone in NATO. We also have mutual defense treaties with many other countries, for example New Zealand, Aystralia & Israel.

In reality: UK & Israel are the only 1's we can really trust when the chips are down.

Great question. You will find most of our formal allies listed in the North Atlantic Treaty, so NATO documentation is what you need.

NATO-North Atlantic treaty organization,
SEATO-South east Asian treaty organization,
CENTO-now defunct
France-only when it suits them.

Other pissy, sometime allies depending how much we pay the backstabbers.
