Is Jack Nicholson a great actor, or do we just love him because he's insanely creepy? I honestly can't tell. *lol*

He's great at what he do. Most of the time, scripts are custom tailored to have a character that fits him. In all of his films--in all of the scripts that he have considered, he played a very specific type of man, and it would be unthinkable to have Jack Nicholson play a different type of character.

So, yes, Jack Nicholson is a great actor. But, by choice and circumstance, he had limited the scope in which he acts. He is far from the greatest all-around actor out there.

I hope that helps.

Jack Nicholson is *REALLY* good at playing Jack Nicholson. If you're making a movie that has a Jack Nicholson character in it, there's really nobody better out there, but for a subtle or nuanced performance, he's probably not your guy.

Yes he is a great actor, he's just not always in great films.
I recall Five Easy Pieces (personal favourite), Easy Rider, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and others of his earlier work.
Has been nominated for an acting Oscar in five different decades (1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s).
Twelve times altogether and winning three, more than any other actor.

I'm definitely entertained by Jack Nicholson, but I don't believe he's versatile. Dustin Hoffman is incredibly versatile.

I saw "The Departed" and everyone, including Jack, did a superb job with their roles.

he's ok as an actor. not the best by my standards, but his creepiness, sharp look and dry sense of humour (in his movies)make him a favorite.

He is definitely very charismatic which serves him well. He was great in Cuckoo's Nest and other movies, but he does not have much range.

He used to be, now he just plays himself over and over again. (I'm thinking Chinatown, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest)
