Two reasons;
1.) The people who could legalize it make more money directly or indirectly from the inflated price it brings as contraband.
and related to that
2.) it is easier to produce your own pot than it is to produce your own booze.

Because alcohol is cool but marijuana ROCKS!!! Seriously though I think it simply has to do with the fact that alcohol has been around much, much longer than marijuana (ancient Egyptian brew wine and beer already). This makes it more socially acceptable right now, while marijuana are new on the scene and has not enter our collective social conscious as an acceptable form of entertainment. With time and more widespread usage this should change soon, and marijuana will be legalized (along with creation of marijuana support group such as Marijuana Anonymous, etc….)

Alcohol isn't illegal because of the social class that uses it and marijuana is illegal for the same reason. The social class that uses alcohol the most is the upper elite in American society; therefore, the government is not going to make alcohol illegal and miss out on all the money given to the government to pad official's pockets. Marijuana is often used by lower classes in American society, who often get a bad wrap for causing trouble in society; therefore, marijuana will never be legalized.

I think it is because our society accepts alcohol but for some reason our society does not accept marijuana. It is a purely social issue. I think that someday in the near future the American society will indeed accept marijuana just as it does alcohol. I think that one reason for this is that most people believe that marijuana use leads to the use of more dangerous illegal drugs while alcohol does not.

Alcoholic drinks go way back in history. Mary jane is a new world herb and not widely known or used. It was actually criminalize in one of the U.S. crackdown on Mexican immigrants in the 20s. Before that it was know as hemp, marijuana sounded more exotic and threatening.
Prohibition failed because alcohol was so firmly entrenched in Americans lives. Hopefully, they will both go the way of tobacco and people will choose just to enjoy the natural highs of not being high at all.

Alcohol in moderation does not destroy concentration and motivation as does marijuana. Having smoked hootch for a fairly long time in my distant past I can assure you that glaucoma not withstanding you are far better off in the absence of cannabinoids in general. However, I cannot say for sure that I would continue to refrain myself in the absence of random drug tests -- only that since I have remained drug free my concentration is markedly improved and I don't try to sleep in til 2 pm anymore.

Both are bad for you, alcohol is probably worse because it is legal. Marijuana is still illegal because too many gov. agencies make too much money trying to stop the trade.

Cause alcohol is part of the economy, they cant incorporate weed so thats why its illegal, that and after prohibition failed, they needed something to be the new scapegoat.
And sides college would be sooo boring without drunks for me to laugh at and shove over.
