All my work colleague mommies said Avent so that's what I registered for. We never got them and when my milk came in I DESPERATELY needed a breast pump and the public health nurse recommended Avent too so I went and got all Avent stuff.
I pumped once every day or two to keep my milk supply up and the pump was easy to use and clean. As for the bottles we never had any problems with nipple confusion or anything. Even when we gave my daughter a bottle once very early... (at 4 weeks instead of the 6 weeks the hospital and the public health nurses recommend) because we were going out to a Christmas concert one night and my parents were babysitting. After that my hubby gave my daughter 1-2 bottles a week for 5 months just to make sure she'd keep taking them when necessary.
They say they're closest to the breast and I guess they're right!
Plus a friend of mine had a problem where a part of her pump fell in the dishwasher and got wrecked. She said Avent was fabulous about shipping her a replacement part really quickly (because when you need it you NEED it!!!)
When your child switches to cups, you can purchase the cup spouts and handles that will fit onto the bottles you already have! The spouts are spill-proof and are available in a variety of fun colors.
Avent also makes pacifiers, spoons, plates, bowls, etc.
Also, I hope you never experience this, but a manual pump (rather than electric) is handy to have if you ever get a plugged milk duct. (OUCH!!!) This happened to me twice and all you can do is breast compressions/massage and nurse like crazy to try to work it out before it turns into a Mastitis infection. I'd nurse my baby on one side and take the pump with me into the bath. I'd lay on my tummy in nice toasty warm water for a few minutes and then pump while still in the bath and it got things flowing smoothly again in no time at all.
Good luck!

I'd go with the Medela Pump In Style breastpump. It's a workhorse and extremely efficient. I love mine and use it every day, and have used it for almost 2 years now. Some women I "know" online report better results from the original Pump In Style than from the Lactina (the hospital grade from Medela) AND the Pump In Style Advance (the redesigned model that has a "let down" button). However every woman responds differently to different pumps.

If you are returning to work...the Medela Pump in Style. It's worth the money. I can pump 6 ozs. in 5 mins from one breast!
If you just want to do occasional pumping in between feedings the Avent Isis is really nice.

As someone suggested earlier in the answers given to you, the Medela heavy duty hospital grade pump is the best. It even increases the supply of milk in mother's who start with very little. Get to this page: http://www.medela.com/NewFiles/breastpumps.html
You can find the required information and go on from there. Good luck!

Avent is the best make sure you get an electric one as I regret getting a manual one.
I use my breast pump twice a day as it is so handy to have a supply in the freezer of breast milk for when you have to go out. It is also good to know even if you get stuck you have some milk in the freezer.
You also need to express milk when they start solids to put in their ceral and mix with custard.
The Avent bottles are so versatile also and come with spouts and handles for when your baby gets older.

I would suggest the best breast pump is called "Male-O-Matic." You can usually find this pump at any local bar. The best ones are the ones that are sitting alone in the dark, looking like they haven't been in the company of a big breasted woman in years. They don't come with instructions, because they "pump" automatically once the breast is placed in their hand.

I've heard wonderful stories about the Medula Hospital grade pumps - the ones you get from the stores like Walmart have been getting low ratings. I guess the electric ones are better as they are very close to the sucking motion of the baby.

Medela brand seems to be the best. That's the brand I used and it was wonderful...even the manual pump that came with it.
