What is the title of a book I read in the 8th grade about a guy who couldn't walk, talk, or anything?

We studied it and talked about stream of consciousness writing. It was a really good book, I just can't think of the name. I believe they called the man Joe but that wasn't his name. The story was told from his point of view, I think.

Maybe it was "Johnny Got His Gun," a book about an injured soldier who can think but not communicate or move. (?)
