I found this in Word in the help section by asking "how can I count words in a document."

Count words and lines in a document
On the Tools menu, click Word Count.

Note You can also view the number of words and lines in a document by clicking Properties on the File menu, and then clicking the Statistics tab.

I tried it both ways and it works great.

Hope that helps.
