I consider both. Sometimes I don't care for a song but I can start liking it because of it's lyrics. while,other times, I don't like the lyrics to a song but I can stand it because of the melody. I care for lyrics a little more than melody but I do need a combination of both to really like a song.

I've always been a melody guy. When I was a teenager the pastor's wife remarked that I should start listening to the lyrics as well because I'm missing half the value of the song. And she was right. There's a lot of poetry and meaning in songs.
For me, it's kind of like when you see a beautiful women for the first time. You can't get over her breathtaking beauty and you're in awe. Then, after you get to know her, you start paying attention to the meaning of her words.

Both are really important ... but I'd have to say the lyrics because no matter how nice the melody - if the lyrics are really stupid or offensive, I would be turned off.

its lyrics and then its melody the melody is allways cool but the heart of the song is the lyrics, go to a song u love hear gest the melody and hear gest the lyrics u will fine that the melody is nothing without a lyrics.......

i'd say first you'd consider the melody, and as u get to really listen to the song, the lyrics become more and more important.

the melody, there are many songs that are well written but the melody does not go along with it. At least for my preference.
