Always be aware of your immediate surroundings, including anyone you see. Make sure that you would be able to describe anyone you are close enough to see well, and at least a vague description of them if seen from a distance. Stay as close to a lighted and busy area as you can. Have some you know who can call you or you can call when you get home. That person should be someone you trust implicitly and should know what route you take to get home in case you do not make it home one night at a reasonable time frame. Then they can come look for you or give the police a head start on where you would have possibly been at any given moment. If it is feasible, have a couple of different paths you take to get home so that you do not become easy to stalk as a creature of habit...that would be true even if you did drive. Carry pepper spray on your person and have it in your hand and ready to be used. You do not want to have to hunt for it should you really need it. If attacked, God forbid, cover the facial area with the pepper spray and yell as loudly as you can"FIRE!!" It is sad that some people will not respond to a cry of "RAPE!!" but I do not know too many people who would ignore fire. Take a cab if and whenever it is feasible or see if there is someone you work with who can at least put you somewhat close to home. Be safe and be aware are the best pieces of advice other than if it comes down to an attack, you fight back with everything you have and leave as much of your dna around them and pick up as much of theirs as you can be it hair pulled or skin scraped from under the fingernails. The harder you fight back and the more noise you make, the more dangerous a target you become for a would be attacker and chances are they will leave you alone rather than risk being caught. Good luck to you and God be with you.

I use to be a bartender and had to walk home at like 3 am. For one keep your keys in between your pointing finger and your middle finger as you walk sticking out side your fist. It is a good weapon to scratch a stocker with and also that way if you must run and you get to your house you have your key in hand to unlock the door you can get to safety in no time flat. A small blow horn or something that makes a loud noise is good to so you can put it to the ear of your attacker and so you will be able to signal for help. I use to carry a knife too, but don't do it if you are not confident enough to do what you must to get away because it can quickly be used against you. Watch shadows when you walk and listen for any sounds but always look forward because if you keep turning around to look behind you they will know you are scared and think you would be an easy prey. I have been followed home a few times, and I understand the fear, but don't let it get the best of you. Most likely you won't have any problems but if it does happen I hope this advice helps.

Always be on guard. Never walk with your head down keep your hands by your sides and stand tall. I know after a hard day of work you feel like your butt is dragging. Remember is you mind and body.
Take some defensive courses. Always have your keys out they can be used as weapons. You could take a cab home but then they are so expensive or maybe ask a friend.

Enroll in a self defense or karate class. If that isn't possible, be very aware while you walk and place your keys tightly between your fingers to use as a weapon. Have your cell phone close by and get some pepper spray. If you are approached or attacked, scream, hit the guy on the temple, in the eyes or in the balls and run.

OK, take off your earings, and wear a baseball cap, and tuck your hair in. Try to look as little like a girl as possible, you know kind of like a guy.
Do not carry valuables with you, but carry $30- that's how much a mugger will be happy with, and not hurt you for carrying no money. Bring a fake wallet with you- if you get accosted say "That's all I have"- then throw it one way, and run the other way SCREAMING "FIRE FIRE FIRE" If some guys come up to you, and start scaring you, look at them and say "I think I work with your mom"- that makes them less anonymous.
Always call someone before you leave, and tell them when you will get arrive at your safe destination. Be aware of your surroundings, even if they are scary ones- that's your best chance to react.
Try to get a guy to walk home with you, and help him in a different, acceptable way. Ask to be rescheduled

well here is a tip you can remember. I have a black belt but I do not teach but I always teach the women I know this: Your joints are powerful. Your elbows are amazing weapons, so are fingers if y ou remember to keep them rigid and attack soft areas such as eyes, throat, stomach. Bend down your hands tight and your wrists become bombs that break noses in one good swipe. Wear a whistle around your neck. As soon as you can get away scream and blow that whistle. Remember, go for soft spots, especially eyes and throat.

Walk like you're mad at someone...not in too big a way, but march along briskly with purpose, with your head up. Conceal flashy things before you set out, so you don't attract any attention. Do not let yourself appear to be scared.
Keep to open areas with other pedestrians, or at least other traffic as much as possible.
9 pm is not that late, you should be fine.

If it's possible don't walk the same route each night... mix it up a little.
Carry a cell phone if you can afford one.
Always walk with a small flash light in your purse
and never ever listen to music through earphones, you need to be alert...
walk closer to the road as oppose to on bankings with trees and shrubs.
hope this helps.
