It kind of depends on the job. However, in general, production is measured by "how much you get done." In otherwords if your job was typing, it would be measured by how many pages you completed that day, then further compounded by how many pages were typed by everyone that day, and then compared in the economy with how many pages were typed that year by everyone in the industry.

Economically speaking, productivity is a main factor of what drives our gross domestic product. It is a measure of how much output a company produces.

A Company is set up for the purpose of producing something.
Workers have to be productive to sustain a company's profitability to keep it running. A successful company is always
planning to produce more of their products and gets an annual percentage of profit to continue its operations(sustainability). Production is determined based on the capacity of the machinery used and people who are assigned to handle production. Production quota is planned ahead in daily, monthly and yearly basis to jibe with the market demands.

Production in the workplace typlically means any work being done that exceeds the usual norm. On a day when work is taking place at its normal rate it is considered as "work". When work is being carried out above expectations is it considered a productive day hence alot of "production". When work is slower than normal we use the words "lack of production."

The measures of productivity will be different depending on the industry. If you're in a factory or production, it's how many parts or pieces you can produce in a designated period of time. If you're in sales, it's how many units you've sold or how much money you bring in in a designated period of time. Realize that every company is in the business of making money. If I'm paying you $50,000.00 a year to do a job, you must produce well over $50,000.00 a year to make it worthwhile for me to employ you, pay my bills, buy supplies, and still make a profit.
