I had a discussion with some people tonight--who basically said that crime is a result of an unsupportive and flawed society. Yes, society is flawed, but I think that individuals have free-will and are therefore capable of their own decisions. This is not to say that some environments do not breed crime--desperate situatuations create desperate people--however, not all people from bad situations turn to crime. For example, I think it's BS for an abuser to try to gain sympathy just because they have been abused--I think that people who have been abused, since they understand what it is like to be victimized, cannot be absolved of their actions if they too, turn into an abuser--it is morally reprehensible that they create more victims. And with this whole female teacher sex-scandal thing which is becoming more and more prevalent in our society--they often claim that they are not being fulfilled in their own lives, and therefore they seek fulfillment where they can--it's still wrong!

In our society we are taught right from wrong, so when one becomes a criminal, i believe it is from choice. Now those choices may stem from a legitimate problem, but they are also able to be fixed. What happens majority of the time, is too many people blame the system when they themselves are unwilling to make changes to better themselves. If you have been given an opportunity to make something of yourself and you didnt., the only person you should blame is yourself!

I'm a relativist so this answer might be kinda weird.
I think both are responsible. Society designs the laws and we can choose to adhere to them. I would argue that society has more influence over the individual than the individual has over society. There are many instances where society has changed an individual, but rarely does an individual change society. From a practical perspective however it's easier to conform the indivual to society than to conform society to the individual. In short I think you can blame society for creating the opportunities/motivations for crime but you can blame the individual for indulging on them. As for the whole teacher sex thing I think it's overreported. I am of the persuasion that humanity has not gotten better or worse just better reported.

I think that a large majority of the crime is based on society. When they took the parents right away to discipline their children then crime took a drastic turn up. In the last 20 years the small petty crimes are up and as these people get older they start committing bigger crimes. I think it all comes down to no discipline.

Ultimately, no matter our environment, we all know the difference between right and wrong and that is where the buck stops. Crime and punishment is not dished out to society, the individual who commits it will have to wear it.

individuals have the last choice whether or not to commit the crime...it's them that pulls the trigger..not society.
