actually its kind of greenish if your actually talking about the ocean and not the gulf but its because of the sediments floating on top of the water and algae and stuff like that.

The ocean simply reflects the sky's blue color. The real question is why is the sky blue. This has to do with small particles in the atmosphere. The small particles can only deflect small wavelengths of light well. So the small wavelengths of blue light are deflected by these particles down to our eyes. The red wavelengths pass on by mostly undeflected. When we see a blue ocean, we are seeing blue light that has been deflected from the sky down to the ocean and then reflected off of the ocean's suface to our eyes.

The water particles are naturally blue with Sun light. Plus, blue is reflected from the blue light from the sky. If you were to take a huge flashlight and look at the water with it at night, the water would not be blue.

The ocean is blue in places but it can also be a greenish aqua color as well. It depends on the position in the world, the density of the atmosphere and the humidity of the air in the location in question, and the time of year. Basically, color is a refraction of light. As light enters our atmosphere, it is refracted. Depending on the angle of refraction that light can have various colors. In some parts of the world, that refraction is perceived as blue in others green in others aqua green.

take some water in ur hand.....what colour is it??
exactly!!
blue is not the colour of water.......rather it is a result of the depth of the water.....
for e.g.
the water in a swimming pool seems blue because of it's depth
it is the same thing with water in the ocean

Because the water absorbs all light except blue light, which it reflects and we pick up with our eyes.
