I believe the silence helps us to concentrate and pay better attention to what we are looking for. I know that I turn the radio down when I need to concentrate on anything even while at home.

We would need to concentrate for a while when breaking out of work-in-hand of only 'driving' at that moment to additional work of 'looking / searching'. Hence, turning down or putting off the radio helps avoid distraction to concentrate special need of the hour.

It takes a higher level of concentration to look for a spot and park than it does to just drive.
It also prepares us for the tragic moment where we have to get out of the car, thus not being able to listen to the radio anymore.

I find myself doing the same thing. I turn the radio down whenever I am pulling into a parking lot, drive way, garage, whenever I am coming down my own road. I think its because we tend to concentrate a lil' better when the radio isnt screaming in our ears. Have you ever heard the expression, " I cant hear myself think!" ? Well................ Kind of the same thing. We have to actually be able to hear our thoughts in order to be able to follow our mental directions.

Good insight!
You're right I do that! I dont know why, maybe its because the engine is going quieter as we slow down, so we need the music less to drown the engine noise???
good observation though

Because some people are running low on Brain cells & loud
noise cuts back on wattage.
They need quiet in order to keep those few weak cells charged.
Silence is so they can hear themselves think.

We turn it down to minimze background noise, so you can focus more on the task at hand. Keeping the music up, may distract you.
