But everything with all this hype really have been terrible. And all the ones that people really haven't had that hype have been really good.

Could be a bunch of different reasons......

You got yourself so excited about a movie so it's difficult to meet your expectations (this happened to me with The Da Vinci Code...ick).

Good advertising can make any dull movie seem great. They show some really exciting scenes and explain the story line....except when you actually watch the movie, it's really nothing like you thought it'd be (this happened to me with Hostel, another horrible movie).

Any movie with well actors are going to have a lot of hype. Not every movie a popular actor makes is going to be a hit so if the movie ends up sucking, you are really disappointed.

Finally, the movie itself could just suck. I have found that a lot of recent movies lacked originality or a good plot. True, nothing good has come out recently so I usually walk straight to the older movies when I go to rent something.

The marketing budget for a big hollywood movie can be up to 30% (sometimes more if a movie is really bad) of the entire budget of the film. Movie studios hope to cover their nut in the first 2 weeks of a films opening so, if they hype a film enough and get audiences in the theaters fast enough they (the studios) can beat "word of mouth" that the film stinks. If a film is actually good then the studio knows that people will talk about it with their friends and the don't have to waste so much money on marketing. Essentially they are trying to trick you into seeing a movie they know is not any good.

Because we see all the really good scenes of those movies in the trailers. Always a disappointment after paying to see the damn thing and realizing that half of those scenes were cut from the final version.

Because the studios heighten our expectations by promoting the films but don't live up to them on screen.
