Good dependable vehicles for a growing family like this would be a mini-van;

Chevrolet Uplander-good on gas, safe, electrical issues seats 7
Dodge Caravan-safe but not to good on gas seats 7
Honda Odyssey- safe and good on gas seat 7
Kia Sedona- sort of safe, good on gas, quality is poor. seats 7
Mazda 5-is slightly smaller than a minivan good gas mileage, looks nice seats 6
Toyota Sienna-nice on safety,gas, dependable seats 7

Or start with a wagon and move up to a van as the family grows
Subaru Legacy Wagon-best choice.

a minivan sounds like the vehicle for you. try the Nissan Quest, it's the best looking minivan. a friend of mine has one with a dvd player with 2 screens and it has wireless headphones so you can listen to the radio while the kiddies watch thomas the train. the mini skylights are cool too. the gas mileage is about 18 city 25 hw.

New or Pre Owned.Any new vehicle now a days has a lot of safety features it's the law manufactures due crash tests to keep people alive after an accident,so 2000 or later would be a good choice.Good Luck.

i agree completely with the honda idea, no its not the most patriotic thing to do, but who cares about patriotism when buying american is only gonna screw you...honda is definitly the way to go, or toyota...whichever, but a small suv will be cooler than a minivan, and in most cases use less gas. minivans make you feel like a nerd, but they are very comfortable the odessey has a ton of cool options for the kids and theyre at the perfect age to enjoy them, the options will make driving easier for you, and keep your kids entertained(which means also quiet)

Well, first thing obvious is how much are you planning to spend?
Under $20K? Honda CRV. Fun to drive. Good on fuel (2WD). Decent seating for 4.
Next up?? Honda Pilot.
NO, i dont work for HONDA. I just love their vehicles. Always good on fuel. Engines are quiet. Hardly any mechanical troubles.
I had 3 of 'em.
I see them as the "user-friendly" type.

For that size family, try a miniVAN. There's a lot of good models from Ford, Toyota, Honda. Toyota Previa is good. Ford Eseries is a bit big & Honda odessey is OK.

Although, you may want to consider a mini-van,
Chrysler has the best on the market. Dodge grand caravans have stow and go seating which is an excellent option
