I am a Dr. Who fan for over 20 years. It started in the 60s - a man (time lord) from a planet called Galifray is marooned on earth with a broken time machine and he likes the planet and protects it from various alien invasions. Over time he gets off earth and travels the galaxy with a companion. He seems to be trying to show a companion the wonders of the galaxy and keeps stumbling upon intergalatic intrigue.

An important issue is the way they tried to protect themselves when an actor wanted to leave the show - they made the Dr. race of people have sort of 9 lives. When the Dr. gets to be a certain age or has a traumatic event, it can bring upon a new "regeneration" so a new actor can step in without much story trouble (and the outfit change for the new actor has gotten to be a bit ceremonial). At times they have movies where the doctors past selves are all reunited through time tricks and stuff.

It's loads of fun, and great writers (like Douglas Adams - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) have written for Dr. Who. The Dr. is usually very charming and his companion is usually quite good at screaming - and most of the episodes are shot in British quarries. The new shows look true to form, with a bit more polish.

Peace!
