This stamp was issued August 14, 1964 to honor the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth. At that time 5c was the cost for a first-class letter within the US. It may have been used on a card because the sender only had 5-cent stamps and didn't think it was worth a trip to the post office to get the cheaper (I think 3c) stamps used for post cards, or it may have been used at a later date when the post card rate was 5c and someone wanted to use up leftover stamps. It is very common and only worth a few cents as an off-paper stamp, but it is worth a bit more if you leave it on the original card - 50c-$1, probably.
