What is the deferens between 4/4 (four four) time and common time.

"C" (common time) and "4/4" mean the exact same thing. However, if you see a "C" with a line going through it (kinda like the symbol for "cents"), that means "2/2," or "cut time" (aka - "alla breve").

They are both the same. The "C" was used in earlier music.
