We used to categorize our dresses to the nth degree in 4-H sewing. Those were the days when it was not unusual to sew your own clothes. The quality of construction and fit was far superior to anything you could purchase, (unless of course you were rich enough to hire your own custom tailor or seamstress)
Sundresses were meant to be comfortable on hot summer days. The fabric is lightweight and breathable, such as cotton or a cotton blend. It is thin enough to be non-confining, but just thick enough to be comfortably discreet.
The dress has no collar and no sleeves. Thin straps either attached at the bodice from front to back at the shoulders, or from front to front by way of going around the back of the neck, often tying behind the neck.
Casualness and comfort are the key, without undue exposure, which would defeat the whole purpose of being comfortable, if one had to worry about keeping the thing on. Traditional sundresses differ from current fashionable strapless dresses in that regard.
Sundresses went well with days of using suntan lotion to attract MORE sun for that deeper, richer tan. Now, suntan lotion is part of our cover up, - in many ways, to protect ourselves from a potentially harmful environment.

To me, a sun dress is a single outfit that has broad straps at the top, various different types of neck line to chose from, and tends to slightly hug the hips before falling straight down. Finally, it tends to be made out of light fabric that allows for breezes during the summer to flow through for cooling.

I don't know what else to tell you. It is a light weight fabric dress, generally spaghetti straps and calf length, and elastic around the middle for comfort. Easy to slip on in the hot SUNNY summer.

I believe sun-dresses are almost always.. if not always.. sleeveless, and slightly loosefitting.. as in.. not garishly tight. I dont know if there is a definition for a garment.. because it can be interpreted many many different ways
