You can't really rip DVD on your computer because it contain copy protection meaning that you can copy even saving on your computer. But I found some website that can by pass it. Try this link http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm! Its DVD shrink program that can copy even with copy protection. Its really useful but you need nero if you want to burn it to DVD. If you mean that you just want to save it as a media player files or something, I don't know how yet because those ripping are made for burn on DVD. I guess you can figure the another way with DVD shrink program.

If you have a any DVD drive you can rip dvds. It need not be RW drive.
All DVDs are copy protected. If you have to create a backup copy or rip your DVD you have to rip it using some softwares that will override the copy protection feature and allow you to copy the dvd.
You can read more about DVDs at http://www.doom9.org/
Remember making illegal copies of DVDs is not good for movie industry...
Enjoy your ipod DVD video..

you can use programs to copy a DVD to your hard drive ad then convert them to play on what ever you want . . . you have to use dvdfab or dvd shrink or DVD decrypter to remove the copy protective crap then you can use Nero or something to save a mpeg or use divx for a divx file
btw you don't need a dvd-rw to do that a dvd-rom will work
