Because of the notion that the best stem cells come from aborted fetuses (which they don't)
In August 2005, Harvard University scientists announced a break-through discovery that fuses "blank" embryonic stem cells with adult skin cells, rather than with fertilized embryos, to create all-purpose stem cells viable to treat diseases and disabilities.
This discovery doesn't result in the death of fertilized human embryos, and thus would effectively respond to pro-life objections to embryonic stem cell research and therapy.

First of all I feel very badly for Micheal J. Fox. I am a nurse and any disease process like he has is horrible. Especially when the mind is not yet failing and is trapped in a non working body. With that said, I believe that stem cell research is a very controversial subject. My concern is who benefits from this research and how will the stem cells be obtained? If the umblical cords of newborn infants are suffcient to provide the needed stem cells then go for it. The afterbirth products are simply disposed of in a hospital incinerator so if they can be used to help treat these types of disease processes then that would be a viable option. The greatest concern is who benefits from this research, hypothetically speaking let's just say that stem cell research has been done and an approved cure has been found, and two people need it. On one hand you have the MJF's of the world(people with enough money to pay easily for treatment) and the rest of the population. The price for treatment will be astronomical(it always is) so the very wealthy will get treatment and the middle class and the poor are just out of luck? How is that fair(don't tel me life isn't fair I am very well aware of that)? What if in the process of researching stem cells they find that the only ones that really provide a cure for these types of neruologically based disease processes are the ones from aborted fetuses? In an age where abortion is used casually as a means of birth control do you not think that desperate wealthy people won't find women willing to become pregnant and have an abortion so that they can sell the fetus for financial gain?
Of course we as a society want to see the cure for these and other debilitating diseases but how do we acheive this end morally and ethically? Until we have the answer to those questions then it is not the thing to do.

Of course, that disease that Micheal J Fox and Mohammed Ali have has no cure, but I want to help any way I can. Because not only were finding a cure for Micheal J Fox but also other people that have the similar problem. I support the stem cell research.

I think there is a huge portion of what stem cell research that the general public is not aware of including those who are affected like mr. machel j fox, by the way a very Courageous man with a big heart. As unfortunate as his condition, is important to understand that it involves genetic manipulation, and is not the hand full of doctors, and thousands who have good intentions, but the one person that could jepardise all existence by missuing the research work for waterver purpose. When ever there is DNA involved there is cloning where ever there is cloning there are mutations some harmless others unpredictable. I would give what I could if there would be a gurantee that the research will not lead to other uses, but the truth is I would never know and that is a big problem if you have an understanding of organic chemistry.

M J Fox has gotten involved in promoting a constitutional amendment to the Missouri constitution which has to do with harvesting eggs for embryonic cell research, cloning and issues that cause emotions to boil over like crazy.
Mr. Fox is suffering from a terrible disease. He has admitted under oath that when he testifies or needs to make a point to the public, he stops his medication so that everyone can see how bad Parkinson's is.
Every side involved is using all they can to get
the public upset and moving in one direction or the other.
I wish Mr. Fox would take his medication. That's what is known to help now. There is nothing but hope for stem cells.

Of course! The people that are against stem cell research seem to be fighting it because they are worried about cloning; they feel that stem cell research will lead to that. Private firms do stem cell research now, all Michael J. Fox is asking is that it remains legal.Women that desire an abortion are NOT doing it just to provide the material for stem cell research. Even if it were not an issue, women who wanted an abortion would get one.

I don't know anyone that is against stem cell research. People are against embryonic stem cell research because there is NO proven cures that have come from it and it opens up lots of scientific abuse possibilities (an example human cloning).
However, there have been GREAT accomplishments in adult stem cell research. I personally have friends that have benefited from adult stem cell cures. There are still MANY, MANY advances that can still come from this type of research.
Here is a quote from wikipedia ...
"Adult stem cells are being developed for use in treatments for a variety of human conditions, ranging from blindness to spinal cord injury. "
You would have to be an ogre not to feel sorry for Michael J. Fox or anyone else with a degenerating disease. It is disgusting how people are using him to sell the idea of embryonic stem cell research.
Our money and efforts should continue with the proven research being done in the field of adult stem cells.

Nobody is against stem cell research.
Many people are against using live viable fetuses as sources for scientific study or medicinal use. Many people believe viable fetuses are living people.
Would you support raising orphan babies until they are one year old and then killing them and using their cells for research or medicine even if it would help Micheal J Fox and other sufferers.
Many people do not believe that viable fetuses are potential people and should have rights. Some people do believe that. But nobody is against helping people like Micheal J Fox.
It is a difficult issue but you should not think that people who wish to protect fetuses do not want to help the suffering.

ofcourse I'd want to help him, I believe in stem cell research, I think it has endless possibilities. but what tuns some people off to it is that the cells come from an aborted fetus.
And shame on Rush limbaugh for mocking Michael J. Fox! That was totally uncalled for!

I think it's a really sticky subject. The research has real potential to be both life saving, and extremely controversial. The likely hood of the technology being used for unethical purposes is just too high for me to be comfortable with.
I am all for learning more, but for now, it just doesn't feel right.

Doc should get into the DeLorean, set the flux capacitor to 9.5 gigawatts, attain a speed of 88 M.P.H and go to the past before Michael J. Fox had Parkinson's disease and bring him back to the present.
