As a sufferer of bipolar disorder, I can assure you that we can be in meaningful relationships - I have been married for 7 years (I was undiagnosed for 6 of those years). Times can be tough, and if you dont take your medication, it can be worse. The problems with emotional availabilty must be worked out before trying to begin a meaningful relationship - you have to know why the problem truly exists before you can solve it. It is not the bipolar persay that causes the problem...there are usually underlying reasons for denying yourself the love and happiness of a meaningful relationship.

Unfortunately it is not mental illness that causes people to not be in meaningful relationships, people with perfect mental health can be emotionally unavailabe without an excuse!!!

There for someone experiencing bi-polar can be in a meaningful relationship and be emotionally available.

Yes, just like someone who has diabetes, they must take their medication until a doctor says they no longer have a need to take the meds.

Anyone can be emotionally available or unavailable...it's a matter of choice.

I really don't know much about it but I had a kid in my class that had it. He would get mad at the simplest things, so I would say no because it would probably be a roller coaster of emotions constantly.
