Beacuse every year millions of unwanted pets are being put to sleep in shelters! 80% of pets born DO NOT get a home for life many end up in a cage waiting to be saved, many are not lucky and get an injection that kills them. I use to assit in the weekly euthinizations. It's not a good thing to do. Orphaned kittens and puppies if a foster home isn't found they are put to sleep! Plus the rates of testicular and cervical cancer are VERY high in the pet population. Not to mention the unwanted territorial and behavor probelms that unaltered pets have. All these problems are solved by a simple procedure. If you have a problem with the pain associated ask for a vet who prescribes post op pain killers.

All very good answers already posted, but I think the most important reason is for your pets health. Nearly all unneutered male dogs will end up with prostate problems later in life. 90% of unspayed females will end up with mammary cancer. Spaying also completely removes the chances of a pyometra, or a pus filled uterus, a very common and life threating illness in older females. Why not do a very easy and cheap surgery early in your pets life, when they are in good health and it will be easier for them to recover, instead of waiting till they are 10 years old and sick with cancer, not to mention those surgerys are easily 500-1500 at a normal vet, let alone at an ER hospital. Every month I see at least 5-10 cases like this, where the animal is in pain, or so ill from infection it cant keep food down. And they are almost always put to sleep because their owners aren't prepared for that type of expense. I dont hold the owners at fault, they dont usually know any better. It just p*sses me off that more people do not actually do research on this type of stuff before buying a pet. Ok, sorry, done ranting now

well the degree of paranoia needed to prevent an accidental pregnancy is difficult &/or impossible for some (there was a recient poster about a 3 yr old dog on its 5th litter). Many people worry about the higher cancer rate for an unaltered animal, personally pyometrea in an unspayed ***** terrifies me, and many behavior problems are less likely in an altered animal. AS for the fat & lazy - l can name some NATIONAL winners at some very athletic dog sports who were spay/neutered dogs. I usually spay/neuter only after I have competed enough with a dog to know if I have a doggy Superstar and I never saw a change after altering.
Your choice but dont you dare hold your head up & claim you are a responsible owner who can handle an intact dog without preventing them from mating!

Cause there is too many HOMELESS cats and dogs i n the World !! and that's because of people who think like you do !! If you exercise your pet it will not become lazy !!! And it won't get fat unless you feed it to much food !! Plus it can save there life, like from cancer !!!! Females can get Cancer and die if not spayed!!! Ask your Vet !!! Or better yet go to your Local Animal Shelter and see how many dogs and cats are in there without a home and will SOON Die !! Because someone didn't spay or neuter there pet !!! It is SAD !!

Spaying and neutering does not change their basic personality. They may not exercises as much cause they aren't looking for a boy/girl friend. But they are healthier and happier pets. Torture is knowing that statistically, only 1-2 puppies or kittens out of every 10 born reaches their first birthday. Or how about the millions of animals put down in shelters every year. That is the truth of not spaying and neutering your pets.

There are many reasons to spay/neuter pets. It helps with aggression, for one. Also, marking territory IN your house, and it is not humane or mean to spay an animal. It's healthier for them, actually. Female dogs who aren't spayed increase their chance of breast cancer every time they go into Estras (heat). Neutered males cannot get testicular cancer if they have none. Also, hundreds of animals are put to sleep every day. Every day. Because of irresponsible people who don't neuter their pets, end up with pups they don't want, can't get rid of and then they drop them at the pound. If no home is found, they kill them. It's not torture either. Great care is given when performing these surgeries and pain meds are given as needed. It doesn't hurt their pride to have missing parts, either. They don't even know it's gone.

The torture is thinking about all the unwanted, helpless puppies & kittens that are born everyday. Most of them have a short life & it's filled with hunger, fear, illness, poor or no shelter. Spaying/neutering is one of the smartest things a pet owner can do. Not only does it stop unwanted litters, it also can prevent some illnesses that unneutered animals can get.

It is doing a good thing.
It is preventing unwanted baby puppies and kittens.
There is a ratio of pet to owner that is off the scale.
A pet needs an owner. No more wandering the streets making more cats and dogs.

Why do people spay and neuter their pets?
1) Keep population down.
2) Cruel to watch the mountain lions and bobcats in our areas catch the overabundance of population of cats and dogs and eat them in our sight.
3) Male cats spray
4) Female cats go into "heat" and meow all night and day.
5) Population = $$$$ to take care of.
6) SPCA/Animal Shelters/Adoptions are over crowded as it is and have to be put to sleep if not adopted out in a certain amount of time.
Our cats are still active as we kept them active after we spayed/neutered them.
Our dog (that passed away of old age at age 11, when I was 10) was spayed after her litter was born. She remained a very good active watch dog still.

Hi well I have to say that it would seem more like torture thinking about how many more animals would have to be destroyed in shelters around the world due to the lack of breeding control & stupid people that didn't look after their pets & let them roam & get pregnant to bring even more unwanted cats & dogs into the world that would end up being destroyed thru mans stupidity...Regards Jake
