Federov never played helmetless.
On July 1, 1979, helmets were made mandatory beginning with the 1980-81 season. Any player who had played at least 1 NHL game prior to that, was exempt from the rule. 216 players who played helmetless in 1979-80 adopted helmets in 1980-81.
In 1980-81, 148 players went without helmets. Entering the 1990-91 season, only two helmetless players were left, Randy Carlyle and Craig MacTavish.
In April 1997, Craig MacTavish retired and left the NHL without any helmetless players.

Are your tapes from Russia? In the NHL he started playing well after the league changed the helmet optional rule to mandatory in turn in the NHL he has to wear a helmet.

Craig MacTavish was the last NHLer to not wear a helmet. The rule was grandfathered in so that as long as you never wore a helmet before the rule, you didn't have to after. That rule is from like 1979 or so... I don't remember...

he always played with a helmet. the rule was in before he joined the NHL that all players must wear one except Craig McTavish who never did. you must of seen him at warm ups or he lost his helmet after a body check and he stayed on the ice. but never ever did he not play without a helmet.

Are you sure those tapes were not taken during the pre-game skate. Anna Kornukova probably made him not wear a helmet then so he could show of his long hair.
