There is a kind of either/or mentality we are all guilty of at times (myself included as you so graciously pointed out). So we tend to view things in terms of WIN/LOSE. If we don't win, we lose. If we do win, the other guy loses. We just can't (or rarely) see it in terms of WIN/WIN. So to answer your question finally, and keep in mind what they say about real estate here, it's
1-self-interest
2-self-interest
3-self-interest
4-self-interest
5-self-interest
How's that for economy of thought?

1. Fear: being first on the list because many feelings of insecurity stems from fear. What we don't understand, we fear.
2. Insecurity: Feelings of insecurity, cause us to be fearful of each other, so we react.
3. Ignorance: is what we hang on to when we don't understand things... Our ignorance maintains the fear we feel which causes us to live in an "idealistic life" (anal retentiveness).
4. "Learned damaged behavior": Our fears were passed on down from our own parents, thus we see nothing wrong with our crappy behavior.
5. Dysfunction: Is how we live because of all those other things which we haven't dealt with yet. It remains dysfunctional because we have not admitted that there is anything wrong. Which goes back to "learned damaged behavior".
Because of all that, no one can understand why they can't get along with each other. Each are blaming the other person without taking responsibility for their own actions and reactions. :-) I hope this made sense.

I'm going to take the natural selection approach, let others judge our character.
1. Carry over from our tribal instincts to protect ourselves
2. Territorial instincts - some people just get too close
3. Nature's attempt at keeping our population at a manageable level
4. A natural reaction to a foreign influence that may shock our own
5. A reaction to distinct body odors that do not include our own
