Faulty ignition circuit?
Faulty fuel pump circuit?
Faulty anti theft system?

If you hold the key in "start" position after it starts, does it continue to run?

Does it die immediately, or stumble and die?

It could be one of several reasons... which count variously depending on the type of engine.

The computer may be faulty - Fuel Injection

Your filter may be faulty, choking the engine

Your battery may need a charge (your alternator may be faulty)

Your engine may have siezed... though you seem to suggest that it actually starts.

Your engine may also possibly be swamped with water if you've been driving in rainy conditions very recently...

You may be out of fuel...

Hope that helps.

A little car information might be helpful. It could be as simple as an IAC (Idle Air control) valve, but it's impossible to tell based on the information provided.
