It's for a non profit agency but I figure by starting low, I can better familiarize myself with the agency and hopefully grow.

As long as its a foot in the door of the place in which you want to grow your career.

Being a receptionist is a fantastic way to meet people at all levels of the organisation. What's even better, if you can get it, is work being one of the senior execs personal assistants. Its what I did, and just through meeting heaps of 'important' people I was promoted out of that job after 6 months.

Typically this is a TERRIBLE idea. Everyone will always see you as a support staff, you most likely will not get the respect nor the promotions, they will bring in outsiders. Additionally if you ever look to get a job elsewhere, people will look at your resume and think..."huh, couldn't cut as a "whatever you were trained for" and you still won't have any experience in a field that will make you some money.

You'd be better off take a position outside of the non-profit, and get experience in the position you want, and volunteer at the non-profit during your free time. When a position opens at the non-profit that fits your education, you will have experience and the networking in place to get the job.

You have to start somewhere. Good for you for planning to earn a living rather than sitting around saying there are no good jobs and not settling for a low-paying job like some people would. I always think that no matter what you do, if you give it your all, people will notice and keep you in mind for something better. And the work experience is very valuable.
