C is the passing grade. D is basically, to make a pun out if it, stands for DUMB and F is fail. What good is it to give an E grade when between a D and an F, just show that that person's/student's knowledge of the subject matter is still inadequate to be of any value.

The adage, " A little knowledge is a dangerous thing" is very appropiate in this case. I you know "diddly squat" about something, then just "didly" is not going to make much difference either. You are just 'splitting hairs'.

In Australia, Queensland schools (1970's into the 80's) had a 5 letter grading system for the Report Cards:
A - Excellent;
B - Good;
C - Satisfactory;
D - Unsatisfactory;
E - Most Unsatisfactory.

Things have changes with certain explanations of results attained by students being described as Very High Achievement; High Achievement; Sound Achievement; Developing; Needs Support.

It is not a good indication of Educational achievement if an 'E' appears anywhere on someone's Report Card.

Schools use many types of letters to grade students. F is the universal failing grade in all systems.

You can up until elementary school is finished. Then, I guess teachers want you to feel bad for failing something from getting an F instead of an E in middle school and onward.

F stand for failure. Anything lower than a C (70 percent) is just plain pitiful anyway - why would you want an E?
