Amniotic fluid is very thin, not mucus-y. It's a lot like urine in consistency, actually, very watery. It can come either in a big gush or trickle slowly over many hours.

If you have litmus paper handy (yeah, I know, right), you can test the acidity of the discharge: if it's acidic (below 7), it is urine; if it's around 7.2, more likely it's amniotic fluid. Amniotic fluid has an almost sweet smell, and doesn't smell like pee. Late in pregnancy it's very common to leak small amounts of urine, so it's easy to be fooled.

Final verdict: Call your doctor. S/he will be able to give you more guidelines, and depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy, will have options on how to proceed or investigate the issue.

Good luck with your pregnancy!

there is more of it then a normal discharge. Even a small, high leak will wet your pants. It also has a distinct "birth" smell that is different from anything else. If it feels like you are peeing a little and you can't stop, that would be a leak. Ironiclly, if you were leaking and ran and sat on the toilet, the leaking would probably stop just as you sat down, this is due to your body angle, you leak more when you're straight.

Sometimes you can't tell. If you go into the Dr. or the OB department they have test strips that they can put into the discharge and it will turn to a different color if it is amniotic fluid

If you have any questions, you need to go to the ER and have them test your fluid. They can tell you if it's amniotic or not.
It's important to know because that is what your baby is living in, and it needs the fluid to live. So make sure if you have any questions, go to the ER quick!
