When most people swim, they breathe in through their mouths and breathe out through their mouths. The nose-breathing only comes into it when you're doing a flip turn and don't want to get water up your nose.
Swimming is a vigorous exercise, and you need to open your mouth to get a lot of air. But you also have to get rid of that air in a short period of time, which may cover one, two or even three stroke cycles. Exhaling through the mouth allows you to blow the water away from your mouth as you roll your head to the side to take in another breath. If you didn't exhale through your mouth, you would start each inhalation with a mouthful of water.
That may be okay for fishes, but doesn't work well for swimmers.

I am a swimmer and have been on a year-around swim team for 6 years. The style of breathing is something I personally, and most swimmers, don't do. You possibly could do this with backstroke since you have the most air time with the stroke. But, when you're doing freestyle, fly, and breast, most people use their mouths only. I believe the reason why swimming is so healthy is because of the strenuous workouts that emphasize the entire body rather than just one area (legs, arms, etc.). I hope my opinion is helpful with your question.

The vigorous exercise of the muscles, accompanied by no jarring or high pressure, is the souce of swimming and its proper place as one of the healthiest exercises.
When you breathe in, the air will be warmed and filtered if you breathe in through your nose. But even runners breathe through their mouths when sprinting or running while their noses are stuffy.
But the style of breathing is much less important than the quality and vigor of the exercise.

Umm I think that you think about this too much. There are different ways to breathe for different sports I am sure, but you can't swim and breth through your nose at the same time.

If you breath through the nose only, you'd probably have complications, whereas when you rotate nose, mouth you are not taking in water. Remember at some point your face ic flat in the water, good time to breath out.

You have a point, it workes out ever muscle in your body. Even your month because of breathing. To your question about how to breath it does not matter, it sometimes helps you breath if you switch it around different ways.
