There are a few differences, the biggest is the temperature at which they com bust, or ignite, or burns. Diesel burns at a much higher temperature than Gas. Also Gas engines use spark plugs to burn the fuel, Diesel however does not use spark plugs, instead the air and fuel mixture is compressed tightly, raising the temperature in the combustion chamber until the mixture explodes. Diesel burns much more efficiently than Gas. Diesel engines are much more powerful than Gas engines. And Diesels engines are known to last much, much longer. Hope that helps.

Diesel engines always have to use diesel fuel which is rated with a cetane number. Gasoline engines always are required to use much more refined fuel known as gasoline in various octane ratings. The higher the octane the cooler and slower it burns. Big trucks all have inner-cooled turbocharged diesel high compression low RPM engines which create more torque, fuel economy and power. They also travel more over the road miles between major engine overhauls than any gasoline engine.

Essentially they are both hydrocarbon mixtures distilled from petroleum. Gasoline is more volatile, which means it evaporates more readily. It readily forms a "gas" which is the origin of the name. Gasoline is mainly formed of molecules having around 6 to perhaps 10 carbon atoms.

Diesel fuel is a different mixture of the same type of hydrocarbons which is much less volatile. Therefore it does not evaporate readily, though it will do so given time. It is mainly formed of molecules having around 10 to perhaps 16 carbon atoms. It is very similar to kerosene or jet fuel.

Weight for weight, diesel fuel contains more energy than gasoline.

This may be tough to understand, but here we go. Gas is more volatile than diesel, that is it vaporizes with less pressure and is more explosive. Diesel requires more compression to vaporize but contains more energy than gas. When the piston of a motor comes up on the compression stroke the pressure of it squeezing the fuel/air causes the fuel to vaporize (this is called the diesel effect). A spark plug (gas), or glow plug (diesel) ignite the vapors and the resulting explosion drives the piston back down. Hope this helps.

Hi,

Diesel fuel and regular fuel both come from the same source: Crude oil.

There is a plethora of ingredients in crude oil, the lighter more flamable stuff tend to settle up top and the heavier less flamable elements tend to be on the bottom. gasoline is made by seperating these elements where they will be divided/refined into octanes, such as 87, 89, 91, 93, etc which equates your regular, medium, and premium gas you buy from your gas stations. higher octane fuel has more of the good stuff. The left over bad stuff are made into diesel, which are not nearly flamable as regular gasoline. im not sure but i think diesal's octane rating is in the 60s.

Gasoline fuel will ignite with a spark. Diesel fuel ignites under compression.

Diesel is more cheaper than gas. A lot of big rig trucks use diesel.
