I'm 100% serious about this. My friends and I have literally had debates about it. If you haven't noticed, no one is truly sane, because we are all insane in our own ways. So, then, shouldn't those who think they are sane be the ones locked up in insane asylums, because they are insane thinking they are sane? Just food for thought.

"What does it mean to be crazy? Is it a mental state, or Something Much different? Am I crazy? Are you? Are the people labeled 'insane'? Or Are they the only ones in their right minds? Is everything as it seems? Is it possible to know? Or does that make you ‘Normal’, if you say that you ARE crazy?"

That is a section from a Phantom of the Opera drabble I wrote one time. I think sanity is a VERY relative term. I'm not sure that anyone really knows what sanity is, but we like to pretend that we know a lot about everything, and we make something up. I don't think anyone is completely sane OR insane, but that insanity is manifested in different ways, some safe and some dangerous. I don't think we are ever DRIVEN to insanity, I think it is inside all of us, but circumstances often release it.

There is a vast difference between quirky and insane. Everyone is quirky; that's just being human, and isn't it grand?

Insane, however, is totally different. That is WANTING to hurt someone or something (dog, cat, etc.) or yourself for no logical reason. Taking 'controlled substances' is, in my opinion, insane. Knowing the harm it will do and doing it anyway; just nuts.

Habitual lying -- another form of insanity. The truth is so much easier and usually makes more sense when spoken. Continual lying loses trust and friends.

Hopefully I have explained the difference well enough.

Cheers!

Well Sanity is the state of mind when and where u have a complete picture of what u r doing and what ur about to do in the future whereas taking Insanity into perspective its just the opposite of what i wrote above. I have had this conversation with my mates recently and the above was the answer we settled for, if u think otherwise plz mail me. Its true that people behave and act in different ways but that's just the way they are actually. Different people think in different ways and that's how they communicate with the world.

I suppose there isn't, but we (the people) have created a norm. I watch sports about 40 hours a week. Some people would say "that's insane!" For me, no. I think I'm missing out on 104 hours of sports that I could be watching but I have to work, sleep, eat, love my wife, write in yahoo answers, etc. But I think people who snowmobile in -20 degree weather are "nuts." So, I agree with your statement that "we are all insane in our own ways", but we don't think our insane ways are insane. So no one should be locked up really. Just the ones that project harm onto others. (Course they don't think that they're insane and it's really like a merry go round.....)

It is my understanding that sanity or insanity may be characterized by how one handles him/her self in society. If you do not abide by the rules and regulations of the society in which you live then you might be considered insane. If you cannot follow simple instructions or use reason or logic then you might be insane as well. If you show no remorse for human suffering and pain then you may be insane. I do not agree that we are all insane in our own ways, rather we all possess characteristics or personality traits which differentiate all of us from each other, and some traits in some people may be a bit extreme without actually classifying one as insane.

Your definition of sanity depends on your views of the world and your reaction to it. May be , a man climbing Everest, you will call insane as , you would think, he is going to kill himself. A human bomb , killing himself and a hundred others , I would call insane . But , he claims that he is sane and doing it for his religion.

Your saying is comparable to the old saying that " in a city where everyone is going naked, they will laugh at persons who are dressed".

Sane and Insane , both have to coexist , like the acid and the alkali. Neutralisation , where neede it will be handy.

How very jaded and unhappy you sound. life might desire to have handed you some 'undesirable stories' so you might replace into any such hopeless cynic. thankfully you're usually thoroughly incorrect and faulty. a attitude I propose you attempt (in case you dare?): one million) attempt assembly daily with a grin. (this might takie attempt yet you're able to desire to actively do it via shaping your mouth properly) 2) attempt being beneficial in each and every thing you think of and do -- and whilst it form of feels you're failing in this objective ensure to concentration on correcting your 'attitude'. don't be 'over analytical' merely replace your temper, movements and suggestions. 3) handle human beings in the way you woul choose for to be dealt with -- no count how offended, mal-adjuated, cynical or grotesque 'THEY' might seem... stick to a beneficial and efficient way and objective in each and every thing you do and with each and every physique you meet. Then after tou have executed this for some months or years -- return here -- and write back -- i will assure you your life, your perspectives and your know-how ... your so-stated as handle life/philosphy might have notably replaced. Philosophy is a controversy of attitude and at this modern-day time you have been looking on the backside of a '0.5 empty glass' for too long! (The VERY LEAST this attitude will do is that, in some small degree, you will surely make the international a greater useful place particularly than contribute the detrimental emotional enter to the sphere of know-how as you're at present doing)

I think there are degrees of sanity, and it shows in the way a person relates to others. For example, there's mild shyness or social phobia, and there's the same thing to the extreme. It's just considered a problem when it interferes with your life.

Also if you have a lot of money, or you're famous, it's not insanity, it's quirkiness.

the properties of insanity are as such that we are all insane if varying degrees. That said, we are all sane in varying degrees. therefore who do we lock up?

I think the insane should be heard, because there voice may be the voice of reason, how are we to know?

Sanity is a socially accepted behaviour. Insanity is not socially accepted. When the Society speaks as a majority, then it becomes law.

untill a new society comes along
