African Americans: My fellow Americans (I am not African American, though) who are discriminated in the U.S. very much. We don't even have a black president yet; what was Hilary Clinton thinking? The education in these "racist cities" and ALL parts of other cities like south Chicago or south L.A. should be better. Some African Americans in my school (about 5 percent of school is A.A.) are insubordinate to the teachers and staff, but I have an African American friend who I used to play basketball with regularly. Some African Americans are good, and some are bad. This is the same thing with Caucasians, South Americans, Europeans, etc. People are just racist and they were brought up wrong. Oh, yeah. A lot of African American children in schools are loud; their mouths get them into trouble in class, and their comments are always funny. Some are intellectuals, too.

I am horrified you are treated that way, and saddened at your predicament.
Moreover, why are you asking this question? Will it help you in some way to know this or get angrier?
I will take this opportunity to express my frustration. Often when I read discussions on racism here, the positions are already fixed. I am bothered that no one seems to want to improve the situation, just stoke the rage.
There are a lot of stereotypes about all types of people, everywhere. I hope, as difficult as it is to do, you ignore other peoples racist "opinions" of you and hold yourself to a high personal standard. I don't know how old you are, but, assuming your very young, there will be a time you can move on to another place. The world is full of all kinds of struggles and we are constantly having to learn to deal with them to better ourselves and our world. Get on with that. Don't get stuck in your anger over racism - it will harm you the most and you have the most to lose. Adjust your own attitude and be the best person you can be; remember that you can only control yourself.
What came to my mind when you asked "WHAT COMES TO YOUR MIND WHEN YOU HEAR "AFRICAN AMERICANS"??
I thought of the two people sitting next to me at work. I like them both. You asked.

They shouldn't be trying to sue people or relive slavery. Slavery was a commercial business venture back in those days....look at all the slave trade that existed around the world in S. America, the carribean, Asia, Africa, Europe, etc
African Americans should learn from other successful immigrant groups and stress education for their kids.
Other than that, I think they are very good decent people, especially the ones who have a Christian ethic. I have some very good feelings about certain African-Americans.

When I hear those few words I think that the people that say them are distinguishing them from all of society. However, I also remember the sufferings, endurance, hardwork, and love for the family that some have upheld over the past 400 years as an (African American).

What do I think of African Americans? (Am I supposed to think anything special?) When I hear "African Americans" I think: people, Americans. There are some good and there are some bad. There are some short and some tall. There are some thin and some fat (as well as some in-between). And, there are some great looking ladies and some not so great looking ladies... sorry, gentlemen, I don't think about men, so... fend for yourselves! Ha!

Unfortunatly, racism in America is live and well -- especially towards non-whites.
Frankly I think African-Americans are awesome people. We have an awesome history and colorful culture. If you mean loud as in mouthing off at people in public and don't care who hears us -- yes we can be loud and I see this among our young ladies --especially on the cell phone talking to someone as if they are at home. Or do you mean loud as to how we celebrate life -- of which we have every reason to do.
When I hear African-American, I think creative, talented, artistic, intelligent, compassionate, loving, spiritual, determined.

Personally I hate the words African American, not because I hate the people but, because it designates that they are somehow less then American. This nation was built on the hardwork of black slaves, they built America with their blood, sweat and tears. They should not be considered anything other then American...they are America! I have met too many black Americans that have pulled themselves out of poverty to think that they are less then any white man or woman.
2008? Obama for president!
